Do you tape around your culture lids? If not, you should check out 3M micropore tape.

I don't see why, other than external contamination getting in months down the line, that you'd get algae growth that is so delayed.

Every time I tried to TC Nepenthes seed, I had the same experience. I think it's hard to get rid of that algae during sterilization. I'd like to hear from others. Perhaps the seeds both you and I received were just dirty and hard to clean.

Sometimes it can take many months for contamination to show when using antimicrobial/antibacterial solution in the media mix.

Ah, that makes sense. I picked up a bottle of phytotechlabs' PTC3 solution, but I haven't used it yet because I'm still getting some contamination while refining my explant sterilizing technique, and I prefer to have it show up within a week or two, rather than down the line. From what I've read, that seems to be an issue with PPM/other antimicrobial additions to the media, if you ever plan on replating onto media that doesn't have any of those chemicals.

I'm going to be flasking up some Nepenthes seed this week, so I'll see if I get any of the same algal growth.

It is only happened to neps TC. Im sure alga came from seeds.
PPM just good for non chlorophyll organism, like fungus and bactery. PPM cant kill something like this.
I use PPM for sterilize and media.

Some ppl from FB group said it can be killed by NaDCC. And just get this chemical.

Yes, in my experience the algae definitely came from the seeds too. However, I have had it a few times on Dionaea cultures as well. It's pretty rare though. A milky white bacteria is far more common on Dionaea.

I've experimented with NaDCC for Dionaea, but not for Nepenthes. Let us know how it works for you!

I have had nep seeds in culture for over a year now i reckon, none have shown any signs of contamination, but they also havent grown... it's possible this contamination comes from within the seed somehow?

I have some nep seeds sterilizing right now, that I'm going to be plating up in a few hours. I'm sterilizing them with NaDCC with a little Polysorbate 20 mixed in. I'm not using any PPM/PTC3, so hopefully I'll be able to see if there is any contamination, sooner than later. I'll report back with my results.

Almost 2 weeks, no more contamination detected

So, I have some 19 day old nep seed cultures, that I used NaDCC and Polysorbate on, and they have no visible contamination so far, bacterial or algal. I'm not using any antimicrobials in my media. I will note that I just today installed lights above my cultures, so perhaps if anything was missing for algae growth, it might've been light. Otherwise, no algae so far on any cultures.

Even with no PPM or other similar chemicals in the media? Interesting...
