This is a plant that Steve obtained from David Conner back in 2007 (I think?) and has successfully propagated to the point that he could send me a couple of nice-sized ones to get started in TC. I was successful at getting this monster started in TC this spring, so we're excited to be able to offer some of these to other growers sometime in the not too distant future.

With traps currently at 1.75 inches, this clone has the largest traps of any of the flytraps in my collection right now. My largest B52 trap is just a bit larger than 1.5", so it's not too far behind and may catch DC XL before the summer is over. But regardless, this clone is definitely a beast and worthy of a place in anyone's collection!

DC XL is looking great, Matt! It's good to hear that the Flytrap clone is now established in tissue culture for propagation and eventual distribution.

To everyone-- My DC XL plants down here in the "Flytrap Store South" greenhouse in New Mexico are doing seed duty this year, which means that a percentage of our 2011 Dionaea muscipula seed mix (available at FlytrapStore.com in a few weeks, when the yearly harvest is mostly done) will have DC XL (as well as our own FTS Maroon Monster and B52 and lots of other great clones) as either the pollen or seed parent, or both.

I only just initialized them this spring. I probably won't be deflasking any until late this year or early 2012. After that, they'll need a few months to grow out to be ready for sale. We'll probably auction the first few on eBay and the offer them in the store next summer (2012).

I'm not sure about everyone else, but I am not a big fan of the Ebay auction, I like to see a higher fixed price, I think it makes things a bit more fair. I would probably do it differently, I say this because FTS can be pretty exclusive to those who are on the forums etc. and usually they get a pretty big advantage and would enjoy the plants more (probably) than the average person on a search on Ebay.

Don't take this as an offensive strike or anything, I would just like to state my opinion, I respect FTS owners their affiliates and all its members.

Thanks for reading, comments welcome.

Well, that could be sooner than they're available for sale here. I'll likely have some cultures that I could sell in the store within a few months.

Yeah, I think this may be the largest trapped plant I've ever seen. I've heard that B52 can get traps over 2 inches in size, but I've never seen traps that large on my B52 plants or in photos of anyone else's B52s. Maybe it does really get that large or perhaps someone just eye-balled their traps on a B52 and said that they were 2 inches in size when they were actually just under two inches. I don't know. But this plant (DC XL) makes the largest traps I've ever seen in person (just over 1.75 inches).

And at 5.2cm (2.04 inches) this is the largest trap I've ever seen in a photo (winner of the 2010 largest trap competition on CPUK -- hey! We should do one of those on FTC!):

I'm not sure what you mean by fair. In an auction everyone has equal opportunity to bid as much or as little as they want at their chance to win the plant. And when we only have a few plants to offer, it gives everyone an opportunity at them. Do you think it's more fair to put those few plants in stock at a fixed price in the store where a few people that have a lot of free time are able to continually check the store for any new stock and buy them up as soon as they're put in stock? I don't think so.

And how would Steve and I know where to fix the price for this plant? Inevitably the first few plants will sell for a very, very high price. I don't know what it will be, but I doubt that if we set the fixed price anywhere near the first winning auction price that you'd still be willing to buy a plant.

Patience is a virtue :) There really is nothing fast about growing carnivorous plants, even when tissue culture is involved. Tissue culture makes the process faster, but if you think about it in relative terms of how long it would take to propagate this clone by traditional methods (at least several years), 12 to 18 months (about how long I think it will take for Steve and I to have some plants to offer for sale) seems really fast.
