Autumn is here. It's time to plant seeds for Winter growing and Highland or cool weather growing Sundews. And because my memory is not so great, a few packages of seed I forgot about in the refrigerator. To save space and to continue my experiment, I'm going to ( or at least attempt to ) germinate them in water filled test tubes. Wish me luck!

A special shout of "Thanks" to Smooter80 who sent some pretty exotic seeds to me.
The Drosera indica complex is disproportionately represented here. Eric and I are both fans of this group.

I do not have any extra seeds of these species for trade or sale. Sorry.
(But if I don't mess up, and get very lucky with these seeds, that may change next year.)

Drosera anglica "Alakai Swamp HI"
Drosera aurantiaca Phillips Range Kimberley (D. indica complex)
Drosera capensis "Typical" x D. aliciae
Drosera capensis "Wide Leaf" x D. aliciae
Drosera cistiflora 2
Drosera coccicaulis
Drosera collinsiae
Drosera cuculata Phillips Range Kimberley (D. indica complex)
Drosera fragrans Mt Bomford Kimberly(D. indica complex)
Drosera glanduligera
Drosera hartmeyerorum (D. indica complex) 3
Drosera hartmeyerorum Kununurra Kimberley
Drosera indica "Pink Flower"
Drosera indica "Undarra Giant Green, Pink Flower"
Drosera indica "Undarra Large plants"
Drosera intermedia Mt Roraima
Drosera nana Howard River NT (D. indica complex)
Drosera "ops" extra seeds found in work area, sp?
Drosera peltata
Drosera regia 18
Drosera serpens* / Drosera indica (I.D. being verified)
Drosera venusta

Non-CP
Tillandsia sp?

Today's project is cleaning, sterilizing, and labeling the test tubes.
I'll be posting updates from time to time, if anyone is interested.

Good growing,
Mike

Now that is an impressive seed list!! Good luck with the germination.

I'm sure people will be interested in your results. I refer back to phase one and two frequently. For a lot of my seeds I've started keeping track of water germination times.

Thanks for sharing your info.

A few notes for you:

D. cistiflora I understand isn't easy to germinate and probably requires heat and/or smoke treatment. It's also a winter-grower so it will need cool temperatures and a short photoperiod both to germinate and grow.

D. glanduligera and D. peltata are also winter growers and will need the same cool temperatures and short photoperiod, but the seeds shouldn't need any treatment.

These ended up getting delayed. I didn't get around to loading the test tubes until October 31st. I added a few species and edited my original list. Now the hardest part begins, the long wait. Wish me luck.

Good growing,
Mike

Yes you definitely need lower temperatures to germinate seeds of winter growing species. I would try to keep it under 70F, and a good temperature drop at night may be helpful as well. Some like D. glanduligera (a winter-growing annual, not tuberous) apparently need high temperatures in the 50's to germinate.

Seeds are going into the basement. 75 daytime highs, 64 nighttime lows. Soon, daytime temps will be under 70. D. glanduligera will go into the fridge at night, out of the fridge during the day. Lights are on a sunrise/sunset astronomical time set for 43 degrees North latitude. This mimics what they'd get outside here.

Thanks for suggestions and advice everybody!

We could have some neat seed giveaways next year, with a lotta luck.

Good growing,
Mike

I typically don't comment in these threads of yours Shadowtski, but I definitely take the time to read them all. They are very informative and will written.

One of these days I'll get around to trying a water germination, maybe this weekend I'll give it a go. It'll help clean up my seed compartment in my fridge.

Beat of luck!
