Breeder: John Hummer, Arlington, VA, USA, September 1986
Nominant: John Hummer
Registrant: John Hummer
Description:
Quoted from the ICPS database: "This particular clone produces pitcher leaves up to 6-8cm (2.5-3 inches) in length and about 2.5 cm (1 inch) in width. It usually takes about three years for plantlets grown from leaf cuttings to reach maturity and full size. (...) Since at maturity this clone reaches much larger sizes than normal [Cephalotus {Labill.}] plants in cultivation, I am establishing it as a cultivar (...)."
Propagation: Vegetative reproduction only
Etymology: After originator and size of the plants
Background: Cehpalotus follicularis 'Hummer's Giant' was sent to John Hummer in September of 1986, along with 6 or so other large trapped Cephalotus, by his friend Steve Beckwith of Adelaide Australia. The plant was just coming out of dormancy and Hummer grew it in his terrarium. It became obvious that the plant was more than just an average Cephalotus when it began producing pitchers over 6cm (2.5 inches) in size. Hummer began propagating the plant and has successfully established the plant in cultivation all over the world in various private and commercial collections.
